“I will not die a monster” Heroism in games
Prelude and preface to the tales of the heroes of our hearts..
So, regarding this, recently, I mean, I read a blog about how developers don’t know how to work with villains in games… I don’t know, for me, in all games where you can choose evil, it is shown quite well, so well that many are often sickened by such a powerful roleplaying of a moral monster without principles and honor… -_-
As Geralt himself said: "Evil is evil. More. Less. Average… What’s the difference??» And you know… That extremely interesting and informative blog inspired me to write about the other side of the coin, that is, since evil options always work according to the same principle, then how everything works on the good side? How it works in different games? What heroism is taken into account in different worlds?
It seems to me that many people start an evil playthrough of the game for fun, and after a very short time they shamefully delete the saves of that same “evil playthrough,” because NPC sees a monster in you, and it turns out that creating immorality in games is not very fun… In fact, many people feel uncomfortable from such an experience, and there is this rotten feeling inside: “Lord, what a freak and brute I am”. Well, personally, I often have this feeling; whether good upbringing or some other factors are to blame for this, I can’t judge (although I’ve really liked superheroes since childhood, they’re a good example to follow). It’s one thing to quickly save and, having nothing to do, slaughter the population because it’s boring, or do some kind of schizophrenia without much meaning, and then load the last save, and you’re clean and out of the way, as if nothing happened. But it’s a completely different matter to purposefully follow the path of evil and chaos… Well, you know, according to the classics: betrayal of pleasant companions, murder of innocent characters for money and, of course, becoming a slave trader, as well as other delights of evil that there is no point in listing.
But I DON’T WANT, this is for me DON’T LIKE. The world is already full of shit from under the horse, so vile and terrible that you want to erase your memory, go far, far away and close yourself somewhere where no one will ever find you, just not to see and know about all the horrors of our world… It would be good if so, but, alas, we have to deal with it, keep cool and try not to lose honor and the goodness that various works or close people brought up in us from childhood. Hope dies last, as they say… In reality, there is little we can do, most of us do not shine with charisma and hefty strength. This is life, but games… Games uniquely help us in this regard. Because it is in them that we can become real heroes..
When I gave clean water to a homeless person at the entrance to Megaton.
Today, people StopGame, players and geeks, I would like to reflect on the topic of heroism in games, how much we enjoy this process, how this happens in different games and why it’s so nice to kick evil’s ass! ≥)
Get ready to read my cringe! With all the already established canons, that is, memes here and there, a set of gifs from the site itself and my saves and, most likely, a bunch of grammatical errors 👉👈 And so.. WE ARE BEGINNING OUR PATH TO REAL HEROISM!!
Hero of his own world..
Heroism in games it is not only an opportunity to defeat opponents and save the world, but also a sense of responsibility and significance. As we discover a new story in games and become heroes once again, we are immersed in exciting adventures where our actions matter. Interesting characters, be they companions or others NPC, difficult choices, when good is not obvious, and evil cleverly hides or strongly seduces you, and, of course, epic battles – all this creates unforgettable moments that fill our hearts with warmth and pleasant memories. When exactly YOU you know what YOU were the ones who saved another world from evil, where YOU where you are celebrated as a hero, where you are mourned, where you are remembered with warmth. Where YOU important..
Well, well, gentlemen, choke, open the window with your “it’s just pixels”. I’m trying to be very sentimental and heartfelt here. For me, all those feelings were not pixelated, but quite real and touching.
It is worth replacing that the concept of heroism is interpreted differently in different games. In some it is an honest struggle for justice, in others it is a dark path where heroes are on the verge of evil. Such contradictions make us think about the moral side of heroism and show that “good” in its understanding can be different.
Perhaps one of the best examples to understand: essentially, both characters are on the side of good, but their philosophies are very different. While one chooses the path of love and compassion for his enemies, the other uses his rage and hatred to destroy the creation of evil.
We must not, of https://casino-yeti.co.uk/games/ course, forget that the process of fighting evil symbolizes our internal conflicts and the desire for justice. Since there is not much of it in the world… Ultimately, we enjoy games not only for the sake of winning, but also because it allows us to cope with real challenges in life. Throw out resentment and bitterness, get great role models, be inspired by heroism and try to be the best version of yourself. Become a hero own world..
How I feel after mercilessly killing bad guys (I have achieved complete calm and peace).
Three pillars of heroism🦸
For today’s topic, we will highlight three main pillars of heroism, and based on this division, we will also analyze examples of heroic characters in video games.
This is all, of course, subjective, and I do not insist on the correctness of my judgments, I just write for fun what I want, what will you do for me, I live in another city >:)
And we begin our deep analysis, no, story, legends about the greatest heroes of the world, those who overthrew evil in different ways, those who decided destinies and saved millions, those who inspired us and those we try to emulate… Gentlelady, these are legends about legends!
True valor lies in mercy and forgiveness… 🙏✨
Let’s start from the beginning, with the first representation of a creepy hero, kind, sweet, eloquent and sometimes, perhaps cunning, who appears at the right time in the right place. Someone will say that this is all naive, but even in a fairy tale there is some truth..
The concept of heroism takes many forms. A true hero in the world of video games is not just a character armed with a sword or magical powers. This is the embodiment of ideals, aspirations and moral choices that shape the character and fate of both the hero himself and those around him. And the best example for this would be Frisk, or in common parlance “The Sexless Child”.
LOOK AT THIS BRO: HE’S SO DETERMINED!
Such a hero is able to inspire not only gaming companions, but also real players, testing their strength in difficult situations. He shows kindness in a cruel world, sacrificing himself to save others, without forgetting justice and honesty. This is a person who does not try to fight others, on the contrary, he wants to show mercy to every creature in the dungeon, be it a ghost or a spaghetti-loving skeleton..
Such a hero never looks for conflicts, and if they find him, then he has to run away from them, because all he has for weapons is determination and instant noodles.
Video games offer a unique experience where each player becomes a co-author of their own story, shaping their character according to the models established in popular culture. Ultimately, true valor lies not in victories and trophies, but in a deep understanding of what it means to be human, even in the most warlike and fearsome world.
The one who initially tried to destroy eventually becomes a comrade and friend, by helping in a difficult situation.
It was not for nothing that I added about the creation of my story, because “Undertale” is a wonderful experience in all directions, you can turn out to be either a messiah who will correct the situation, or the worst nightmare for local residents, which once again proves that evil in games can be written no worse than good, but nevertheless, let’s move on to the main points of gameplay and plot nuances.
There are story-based games. Others have a strong graphic component. Some are even based on music. Or they have a very specific gameplay. But there are very few games based on a single word… Well, I lied. This game excels in many ways, but it asserts that there is one word, one expression, one feeling that connects the character and ourselves. This word is not “strength”, “superiority”, “courage”, “bravery”, “wisdom”, not one of those words to which we are accustomed. No… This word… "Decision"!
I choose MERCY!
How I feel when I never chose the path of genocide :3
Indeed, when in many games it is taken for granted that you can attack anyone who attacks you, it is extremely funny to see the “Mercy” option, but this option can open your eyes, starting with the fact that the monsters are not that evil, just dodge a couple of times and show mercy, and it turns out that they are all quite nice guys, you just need a little determination.
The first boss, who is not really a boss, but an unhappy mother trying to protect her child from the horrors of the world.
The will to live… Grasp life to change fate. Let’s call this force… "Decision".
Alphys
I consider this moment extremely indicative of the game, because Toriel is the first serious boss in the game’s plot, and it is here that the “Mercy” mechanic is revealed in all its glory. Having defeated her physically, you will only get disappointment in yourself and indignation, since you did not plan to kill her, but if you show mercy, then she will not hold you back and will let you go in peace and trembling, because her child is strong in spirit, and nothing will break his determination!
The main tempter and the main victim of the game..
I would like to spend a few more paragraphs praising Toby Fox’s masterpiece, but we must move on to the conclusion of this part of the discussion of heroism, and, in my opinion, the most CATHARSIS – this is the final battle with the main tempter Flow! Or more precisely..
There is only one rule here: kill or be killed!
Flowey
The main villain of the entire game, the same flower tempter who meets us from the very beginning of our adventure, the one who CONSTANTLY provokes us into violence and the possibility of killing someone, the one who sincerely hates us and wants us to die, a monster hiding his face under a cute appearance, a wolf in sheep’s clothing… It would seem how to deal with this?
The protagonist’s soul in this battle gains the ability to “refuse”: instead of falling apart, it unites back and thereby prevents Asriel from killing the protagonist. Do you feel? THIS IS THE SMELL OF DETERMINATION AND POWER OF OVERCOMING! They kill us, but we WE REFUSE to die, because the lives of our friends whom we acquired during the journey depend on our victory!
To defeat Asriel, the protagonist calls on the souls of his friends, which he absorbed. They all appear as lost souls, and Frisk must fend off their attacks while regaining their memories through the appropriate actions we learned from being with them.
After the protagonist saves all the lost souls and Asriel, the latter’s feelings such as love, hope and compassion return, forcing him to end the battle, destroy the barrier and free all the absorbed souls. But to win not with a banal sword or an explosion… No, after everything, the main character makes such a move, after which it is difficult to contain his emotions. He’s his hugs..
Frisk is not just a character, it is an idea, the personification of true virtue, capable of inspiring hearts, even the stony hearts. In every action of Frisk, or rather, in YOUR action, there will be a trace, a reminder that kindness and compassion can overcome any obstacles. You (Frisk) go through the darkness of mistrust and hatred, like a bright beacon attracting lost souls to the birth of love, friendship and strength, true unshakable kindness.
